Sound Quality of RDP

The sound quality over RDP can be quite poor by default, to fix and change the quality modes follow the steps below.

Firstly, for sound to work via RDP you need to ensure it's not disabled in group policy, and that sound redirection is turned on. To do this see: https://www.vpsblocks.com.au/support/Knowledgebase/Article/View/154/0/enabling-soundaudio-over-remote-desktop-windows-2008-r2

By default the sound quality over RDP can be quite poor.

To fix this:

  • On your local computer open the remote desktop connection window (but do not connect)
  • Enter in your IP address, then click 'Show Options'
  • Choose 'Save As' and save the .rdp file to your desktop
  • Close the remote desktop connection window
  • Now right click on the file you just saved and choose 'Open With' and select Notepad
  • Add the following line to the top of the file in notepad:
  • audioqualitymode:i:1
  • Save the file
  • Now open the .rdp file with Remote Desktop
  • Connect to the server and your audio should be improved.

You can change the quality modes by setting:

Dynamic Audio Compression
audioqualitymode:i:0

Medium Audio Compression
audioqualitymode:i:1

No Audio Compression (not recommended as it requires high bandwidth)
audioqualitymode:i:2
